This story begins in Spring 2018

I have driven the length and breath of the Mid-West of Ireland. Traversing through counties Tipperary, Offaly, Clare and Limerick, delivering training on behalf of the National Parents Council primary since Spring 2018. Gathering with groups of parents and guardians in school halls and classrooms in towns and in rural villages. I have met some really dedicated volunteers in Parents Associations during these visits.

I have talked about Mental Health, Internet Safety, RSE, Transitions and how to set up and run a Parents Association (one of my favourite trainings - I love helping people come together to create change).

However there were many families who would not be represented at these trainings or evening talks, for a variety of reasons. Some people work evenings, some families are one parent households so there is no childminder available in the evenings, and some people would just be too exhausted to go back out in the evenings.

So the decision came in Autumn 2019 to find a way to reach these families. I decided to create e-learning resources.

Wanting to give opportunities to these parents and guardians to access the learning in the comfort and privacy of their own homes in the evenings after children went to bed was motivating me.

Or maybe they'd take the self-paced learning modules on their phones when they were sitting waiting in their cars in between hurling or drama class pick ups. That was my plan for 2020.

Then, we all know what happened this time last year....

In early Spring 2020, Ireland began to learn what it is like to live with a pandemic. Schools shut first, then many businesses. Family, work and community life has changed dramatically for us all over the past 12 months.

I ploughed on through 2020 with my idea to create e-learning resources. So much gratitude to Stefano from Messori Marketing for teaching me so many new techniques and skills. And thank you to James and Maria Murphy from Lifes2good Foundation for donor support.

And in late October 2020 an e-learning course for Parents and Guardians of 10 to 12 year old children was tested and piloted.

Here we are now in February 2021, in another lockdown. Many families are finding the home schooling challenging. I am conscious that many children in 5th or 6th class would be having RSE classes in school now.

Life Connections wants to support families to have these RSE conversations in the home.
